Fire-Breathing Traxxas Slash 4x4

Question:
Hi Doc,
I want to know if I can put any electric RC car motor in any rc car? More specifically I want to put the Castle Creations 0808 motor in the Traxxas 1/16 Scale Slash 4×4 RTR.

Thanks for the help.
Grant

Answer:
Hi Grant.
First off, you didn’t mention if your 1/16 Traxxas Slash 4×4 is the brushed or brushless version, so this answer will have 2 parts (one answer for both versions).

If you own the brushed version, the short answer is yes. However, the included XL-2.5 ESC only works with brushed motors so you’ll have to swap that out as well. You can pick up a Castle ESC that will compliment the 0808 motor you want to put in. If you’re going to do that, you might as well upgrade the battery too. Dropping in a LiPo battery will completely transform your Slash into a fire-breathing 1/16 scale!

If you own the brushless version, the short answer is yes as well. I would suggest sticking with the stock Traxxas VXL-3M ESC for three reasons: 1) it’s already installed, 2) it can handle a 3S LiPo battery and 3) it’s WATERPROOF!

Whichever route you take, I would stick with either the 4100Kv or 5300Kv motor. Going bigger will get you going faster, but you’re also asking for possibly driveline failures. Unless, of course, that’s the next stage of upgrades!

Good luck.
