What Is Caster?

Caster refers to the angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the vehicle. It is the angle formed between a vertical line and the pivot line that runs through the upper and lower steering points (typically the kingpin or steering knuckle).

If the top of that steering axis leans toward the rear of the car, it is called positive Caster. This is what almost all RC cars use.

In simple terms, Caster controls how the front wheels behave as they steer and how the car tracks in a straight line.


How Does Caster Affect Your Car?

Caster has a major influence on steering feel, stability and cornering behavior.

Here’s how it impacts performance:

Steering Stability
• More Caster = better straight-line stability
• Helps the car track straight, especially at high speeds
• Reduces twitchiness on rough tracks

Steering Feel
• More Caster = smoother, less aggressive steering
• Less Caster = quicker, more responsive steering

Corner Entry
• Less Caster improves initial steering response (more “bite”)
• Helps the car turn in faster

Corner Exit and Mid-Corner
• More Caster increases steering through the corner due to dynamic Camber Gain
• Improves front-end grip as the wheels are turned

Bump Handling
• More Caster helps the car stay stable over bumps
• Reduces erratic steering input from rough terrain


How Do You Change Caster?

Adjusting Caster depends on your RC platform, but here are the most common methods:

Caster Blocks / C-Hubs
• Many off-road and on-road vehicles use fixed Caster blocks (e.g., 4°, 6°, 10°, 12°, 15°)
• Swap blocks to change the angle

Adjustable Front Arms or Inserts
• Some kits allow small Caster adjustments using inserts or shims
• Fine-tuning option for racers

Upper Arm Position (Less Common)
• Changing the angle of the upper suspension arm can slightly affect effective Caster
• Usually combined with Camber Link adjustments

Note: Most RC cars have limited Caster adjustment compared to other settings, so changes are often more noticeable.


When To Increase Or Decrease Caster

Use more Caster when you want:
• Better high-speed stability

• More consistent handling on rough tracks
• Improved mid-corner steering

Decrease Caster (More Upright)
Use less Caster when you want:

• More aggressive turn-in
• Sharper corner entry

• Tight, technical tracks
• High-grip surfaces
• Indoor racing


What to Check After Changing Caster

Changing Caster affects several other tuning elements. Always review these after making adjustments:

Camber
• Caster increases dynamic Camber Gain during steering
• You may need to reduce static Camber slightly

Camber Link Locations
• Affects how aggressively camber changes through steering
• Fine-tune front-end grip balance

Toe Angle
• More Caster can calm steering, so you may adjust front Toe-Out to compensate

Ride Height
• Changes in weight transfer can affect how the car sits under load

Steering Dual Rate / EPA
• Less Caster = more aggressive steering
• You may need to reduce steering input to maintain control

Ackermann
• Works together with Caster to define steering characteristics
