MaxAmps have announced a new addition to their LiPo and Li-Ion battery packs – the Smart Battery Upgrade. This is a tiny LED indicator on the top of the pack with two states (one for charge and one for health) that comes on momentarily to show you the condition of the pack. It is lightweight (less than 10g), has a very small profile (about 6mm in length) and doesn’t consume any power while off.

What We Like:
Care must be taken when using LiPo or Li-Ion packs, so the Smart Battery Upgrade is a much needed enhancement to these packs. Being able to see the both the state of charge and the state of health will certainly help the beginner (or even a veteran) keep tabs on the safety of their cells. This should be a suggested upgrade to every LiPo/Li-Ion battery manufacturer.
What We’re Not Sure About:
While it would be great for all packs to have them, racers might consider this a hindrance, like having wires and a connector.
