Can I Upgrade the Duratrax Evader Slipper Assembly?

Question:
Hiya Doc.
Is there an aftermarket slipper clutch set-up that will fit the Duratrax Evader brushless. Stock set-up is less than desireable. Thank you.

Chad M.

Answer:
Hello Chad.
The Duratrax Evader is a pretty nice truck but unfortunately you aren’t the first person I’ve heard ask this question. The short answer is no, but the longer, more involved answer is yes. You can’t buy a complete conversion but you can purchase a few aftermarket parts that will allow you to use a Team Associated slipper setup. Not only is it a better slipper setup but it will also be able to handle ALOT more power. Let’s take a quick look at what you need.

1) Pick up the following parts: Team Associated B4 Spur Gear of whatever tooth count you need (I would suggest something similar to what the Evader comes with); Team Associated B4 Slipper Pads (#9603); Team Associated Slipper spring (#9605); Team Associated 5-40 locknut (#6629); Duratrax 1/8×3/8 Bearing (x1). These parts can be purchased directly from Team Associated (www.rc10.com) and Duratrax (www.duratrax.com) or from any local hobby shop or online retailer.

2) Since the ID (inner diameter) of the Team Associated spur gear is around 4.75mm and the Evader top shaft is 5mm, you’ll need to drill out the center of the spur gear to about 5mm. Try to keep it as close to 5mm as possible.

3) Assemble the slipper system per the Evader’s instruction manual, but use the Team Associated Slipper Pads and Spur Gear. You might need to add a drop of grease or CA glue to the pads to keep them in ‘the grooves’ in the gear.

4) Since the spur gear (and pads) are slightly thicker than the stock unit, you will need to use the 1/8×3/8″ bearing. This goes on the top shaft after the outside slipper pad plate has been installed (instead of the oilite bushing).

5) Slide the Team Associated spring on the top shaft followed by the 5-40 locknut.

That’s it. You’ll need to set the slipper clutch before you run the Evader. If you’re unsure how to do that, I will have a How To on the site soon.

Good luck Chad, and enjoy all that extra power!
